10 Best Careers Post the Great Global Disaster

10 Careers Post the Great Global Disaster

There are a lot of words that are thrown around to describe the end of civilized life as we know it. Armageddon, the Apocalypse and End of Days to name a few. Most people use these incorrectly, as they are meant to have a religious inference to the end of life on this planet rather than either natural or man made outcomes. Most level 2 “events” (end of civilized living that sends us back to iron age) are put forward as man made, rather than creator made: nuclear war, lab generated killer viruses, computer viruses that fry every microprocessor on the planet, the rise of the machines, global warming, alien invasions, etcetera. Then there are those that are the result of nature: meteor strikes, global earthquakes, perma-winter, worldwide tsunamis, etc.

The main difference between Armageddon, Apocalypse or End of Days and the Great Disaster is the origin. You can rest assured that you can’t really prepare for the first three, (if a higher power wants us gone, we’re gone) but the last one – anything man made or from nature – you can prepare for now and rock up into the new world order in relatively good shape. So to this end, we thought we’d have a little fun and hypothesize on the 10 best careers that you can prepare for now in the unlikely event that we really are sent back to the 1800s.

Understand that if the big one happens, there is a really good chance that it won’t last for the rest of your life. Knowing how government’s work, with secret stores of “mountain deep” technology, fuel, etc. It may only last for weeks or maybe months. That is a lot of time in government disaster relief time; however, assuming things never return to normal, there are a few things you need to know.

First, currency would be useless, except as kindling to start the fire in your wood burning furnace. The same can be said about precious metal. People cite gold as a great “currency” to have with things go belly up, but this is predicated that someone somewhere can use it. With no governments globally (remember, this article assumes things never return to normal), gold is less useful that steel in the scheme of things. Therefore expect to get paid in pelts, soybeans, bullets, etc. In other words you will be bartering…

Then, food, clothing and shelter and anything that supports these assets will be in high demand. This includes energy for the family farm and weapons to protect the family.

With that as a backdrop, here are the Ten Best Jobs Post Arma- eh, Post the Great Disaster…

Co and Smoke Detectors#1 Emergency Medical Technician

Training: Medium to Hard

Time to Train: Medium

Cost of Supplies: Medium

Importance of Job: High

Scarcity of Skills: Medium

Medical attention will be of paramount importance in the new world order and access to hospitals and medical supplies will be in high demand. Further, those with emergency medical assistance training will garner a bigger wage, even if they get paid in chickens, soybeans or whatever the currency of the day is.

bike-shop#2 Bike Shop Owner

Training: Easy to Medium

Time to Train: Low to Medium

Cost of Supplies: Low to Medium

Importance of Job: High

Scarcity of Skills: Low

With fuel limited (or non-existent), being able to tune and repair people’s main mode of transportation will pay well. Particularly if no one else in town can do it! Stock up on inner tubes, tire patches, chains, break cable and get a few good wrenches and you’re all set.

#3 Battery Reconditioning Specialist

Training: Easy

Time to Train: Low

Cost of Supplies: Low

Importance of Job: High

Scarcity of Skills: Low

With some Epsom salt, distilled water and a few other cheap tools that you can acquire for under $100, you can recondition most 12v batteries to 80-90%. All it takes is about $37 dollars worth of battery reconditioning training. How important is this in a post global disaster society? Day 1 you’ll need to find a different line of work (unless you combine this with the skills of a Solar Panel Technician below), but day 100, you’ll be one the most popular people in town.

solar-home-1#4 Solar Panel Technician

Training: Easy to Medium

Time to Train: Low

Cost of Supplies: Low

Importance of Skill: Ridiculously High

Scarcity of Skills: Very Scarce

If you went onto eBay right now, you could buy 1000 watts of solar panel cells for about $100. Combine these with some wood, wire and a few other items and voila, you have a solar panel. The actual input cost of the material for a solar panel is alarmingly cheap; however, locating a fully functioning solar panel later (i.e. your customers) will be worth a king’s ransom – particularly if you can provide them with an array of reconditioned 12 volt batteries to store excess electricity for the evening (i.e. a Battery Reconditioning specialist above). The trick however is in the training, not the material. Learning how to build solar panels now is not difficult, but acquiring the skills with no internet later will be a challenge. We recommend the Jeff Davis Solar Panel Construction Training Course – it is inexpensive (less than $50), excellent and can teach even the most technically challenged person how to build a complete solar array for their home and then the home of their customers for practically nothing.

horticulturist#5 Horticulturist

Training: Medium

Time to Train: Medium/Low

Cost of Supplies: Low

Importance of Skill: High

Scarcity of Skills: Scarce

Growing fruits and vegetables, and teaching others to do the same will be of great importance in the new world. Seeds will be worth more than gold, and the ability to duplicate seeds and teach others to grow mega-crops will be so important that you should combine this skill with one of the others if for no other reason than for your own survival.

gunsmith#6 Gunsmith/Blacksmith

Training: High

Time to Train: High

Cost of Supplies: Low/Medium

Importance of Skill: Very High

Scarcity of Skills: Very Scarce

Okay, we’re going a little dark here, but it’s fair to say that not everyone will act civilized post the big day. A good 38 special revolver, shot gun and hunting rifle, along with the ability to make bullets for all of these will be a skill well worth learning. Also, for those that don’t want to get that specialized, building and selling a good hunting knife will be almost as important.

It will also have the added benefit of scaring away any “would be thieves” who might otherwise decide to enter your realm.

#7 Trading Post Owner

Training: Low

Time to Train: Low

Cost of Supplies: Medium/High

Importance: Very High

Scarcity of Skills: Medium

The person who has or can acquire items of interest will be particularly well suited to the new world order. If someone has a pelt to trade or is in need of bullets, firewood, etc. you could be the most popular person in town. The only downside is building enough inventory to make a living, and importantly keeping the inventory safe. Your most important skill will be your contacts since you can sell inventory held by others and keep a minimum on hand.

#8 Priest, Preacher, Rabbi or other Person of Faith

Training: High

Time to Train: High

Cost of Supplies: None

Importance: Very High

Scarcity of Skills: Scarce

Times will be tough, so the ability to make sense of it all will be of high importance. This is probably not a skill you can legitimately acquire after the big one, but if you’re already trained in matters of religion you will be popular.

#9 Handyman

Training: Medium

Time to Train: Medium

Cost of Supplies: Low

Importance: High

Scarcity of Skills: Scarce

Things will break, and they won’t be replaceable, so if you can fix items that would otherwise need to be replaced then you will be in high demand.

#10 Hunter

Training: Medium

Time to Train: Medium

Cost of Supplies: Low

Importance: High

Scarcity of Skills: Scarce

In today’s society most people are not cut out for this line of work. But if you are then we highly recommend that you embrace your inner warrior and offer your services for a fee. At some point game (deer, duck, etc.) will be the mainstay of the non-vegetarians out there and their buy-product (pelts, feathers, etc.) will be in ultra high demand for clothing.

Our #1 Recommendation??

Solar panel specialist. With no predicable energy in sight and your ability to provide customers with unlimited electricity for the rest of their lives, you will be in ultra high demand. Further, the investment is tiny, competition is non-existent, repair work is guaranteed and the annuity upside is fantastic (i.e. a turkey a month forever!).

So there you have it, Hot Ten Reviews top jobs post the big global disaster. Now you can rest easy knowing that you are going to be ready to contribute to society when the big one hits!
