Best Dog Treadmills 2017 (New Update)
Best Dog Treadmills 2017 (New Update)

I have to admit, the thought that a dog needs a treadmill was a bit like the thought that a human being needs a chewy toy. In fact the image of it in my mind made me chuckle as I envisioned my dog Ginger and I running, side-by-side, at my health club, followed by a light set of “doggie dumbells,” then concluding with a sauna (with a towel wrapped around her little doggie head!). Then I read this poem mounted in a frame and sitting on a table at a Vermont Bed and Breakfast a few months back:

Walk With Old Dog-

Because you will not be forever,
Hope against time though I may,
I paint your picture in my memory-
Eyes blue with age, and muzzle gone gray.
Because you walked with me in springtime,
Puppy-clumsy running free
As you grew we grew together
You became a part of me.
Because you shared with me my sorrows,
Not understanding, simply there
Often spurring me to laughter –
My friend you know how much I care.
Because the years have slowed your fleetness
Though your spirit still is strong
I promise I will take more time now
So that you can go along.
Because you do not fear the future
Living only in the now
I draw strength from your example –
Yet time keeps slipping by, somehow.
Because the day will soon be coming
When I will no longer see
You rise to greet me but in memory –
You will always walk with me…

After I got over the panic that my aging dog would not live forever, my next stop was the vet. “I will slow the progress of time,” I thought “if only to get a few extra years with Ginger.” The vet’s comments were fairly predictable. “She’s healthy but needs a teeth cleaning, and she’s overweight – have you ever thought about a doggie treadmill??”

“Huh,” I thought. “A treadmill for dogs?” As the vet described the treadmill and why dogs need to run, I felt a little silly. “They are the descendants of wolves and wolves often travel 25+ miles a day,” the vet said. How far does Ginger travel? About 30-feet, to the backyard and back, three times a day.

I knew I needed to get her into exercise pronto or she would be gone before her time. The problem is, I am sometimes worse than her with exercise, but I don’t age seven years a year so I still have time – but for her time was limited. I knew instantly that I needed a dog treadmill. Admittedly, for most people the thought of a dog on a treadmill seems, weird…

Let me ease your concern. Dog treadmills, as an exercise device, have been around since 1939 (the first human treadmill was in 1959). It was that year that John R Richards, of Oak Park, Illinois put the first commercial units in place.

They were originally called “Dog Carpet Mills” – don’t know why. Perhaps the moving floor was made of carpet. Whatever the reason their job was then as it is now to give the family pet the exercise that his/her ancestors got when roaming freely across the earth and it looked kind of like a treadmill.

Today’s dog treadmills are a far cry from the original motorless “Carpet Mills.” The ones shown below are every bit as good as their human equivalent.

What to Look For in a Doggie Treadmill – Five Features

  1. Speed – Fit dogs run fast. You don’t need a doggie treadmill that can keep up with “Bolt” but a good clip over a 30 minute period of time is important. This means 5 mph+
  2. Fitness Programs – Human beings use various fitness programs for cardio, weight loss, etc. A dog’s biology reacts the same was as ours
  3. Weight Support – If you dog is small, then any machine will do, but if you have a bigger dog, like I do, you need one that will support the weight. The top treadmills will support a dog that weigh’s 150lbs+. More than enough for most dogs. If you have a big and a small dog, choose a treadmill that supports the larger dog and the smaller one can use it too.
  4. Fold Up – Okay, this is where the human side of us comes in. We might not necessarily want to advertise that we have a doggie treadmill so if you want to put that carpet mill away when you’re done you want one that will fold up.
  5. Price – They’re not cheap, but no motorized treadmill is. Some of these units reach almost $3000 in price, but our top recommendation – every bit as good as the high end units, can be purchased for less than $600.

So for those that want to keep Fido healthy into his/her old age, the following dog treadmills are for you…

A final thought on dog treadmills

Biology is the same whether you are a human being or a canine. Exercise is good for weight control and longevity. Just like humans, you should check with the vet before allowing your best friend to engage in an exercise program. Then, “unleash the dogs” (so to speak) and let Fido run like the wind! He or she will love the exercise and could spend a few extra years on this planet thanks to your dog treadmill.

Woof.
