Today, we at Hot Ten Reviews “test-drove” the Nesco Snackmaster Pro Food Dehydrator and I have to say, as a person who is new to food dehydration, it was very simple to use and did exactly what it was supposed to do. The unit is the best food dehydrator in the market (in our humble opinion), basically comprised of five stackable, air resistant trays, with a warming unit/dehydrating lid that stacks on the top. There is one control on the unit, a knob that adjusts the temperature.
About the Test
For our dehydrator review, we chose “a hand” (i.e. a bunch) of bananas and a pineapple. We cut the bananas into ¼ in. thick slices and did the same with the pineapple. We placed all of the cut pieces into orange juice for about 5 minutes to thwart off brownest in the dehydrator (O.J. provides a protective coating that resists oxidation and helps produce an overall superior end result).
Once we dipped them in orange juice, we then placed the bananas and pineapple pieces in the food dehydrator and let it do its work for nine hours.
Along the way we checked the content for dryness, making sure that the bananas and pineapple were not over-dried.
The end result was perfect bananas. The pineapple was a different story. They still had a way to go – we left them in for four more hours.
The key takeaway from all of this – the dehydrator worked really well, but never mix different content because they are made of different consistency and require different time/heat combinations (looking back – I suppose it’s like baking a pie and a cake in the same oven at the same temperature for the same amount of time).
did its job brilliantly;
attractive (or at least not ugly);
had only five trays or about 10 square feet of space (the more expensive units can accommodate about 15 square feet – about the right size for “a hand” of bananas and a pineapple, but the unit was completely filled).
Nesco Snackmaster Pro – Food Dehydrator Review – Conclusion
We stand by our comment that the Nesco Snackmaster Pro is the best food dehydrator in the market. While we did not test meat to see if it was the best food dehydrator for jerky, that is what this unit is known for so we are confident, given how simple the process was that the unit will accommodate meats as well as fruits vegetables and nuts.
