The Best Right Angle Cordless Drills…

Ryobi Right Angle Cordless DrillThere’s a saying among craftsmen – “you never know how much you need a tool until the day comes when you don’t have it.” The right angle cordless drill is that kind of tool. That day came for me, “Mister I can build anything,” when I tried to install a small Pottery Barn cabinet in my littlest daughter’s bathroom. Kat collects pocketbacs (hand sanitizers that girls exchange with each other – not sure why) and she was running out of room in the cabinet under her sink.

I bought a wall mounted cabinet “kit” from Pottery Barn that was supposed to have an assembly time of two hours. About 1 ½ hours into it, I got near the end and needed to fasten the cabinet to the wall. Like many “master craftsmen,” I only glanced at the assembly instructions along the way – mainly eyeballing the drawings, but I was pleased that I was running ahead of schedule, until it hit me – I missed a crucial step. I needed to insert eight screws into the four corners of the cabinet, which neatly attached to four brackets that were already mounted to the wall. Also, I had already closed up the corner areas that a normal drill would have easily accessed, so I had two choices. Either get in their with a short little screwdriver, or take the whole thing apart and start over. I was not about to do the second, particularly so close to victory, so I pulled out a two inch Phillips head and gave it a go.

After a few herculean twists (while holding the cabinet in the opposite hand), I realized I did not have the strength to do what was necessary, so I was resolved to take the whole thing apart and do it right, when my dad, an even a better master craftsman than me, said that there are drills for tight spaces called “right angle drills.”

Hot Ten Reviews # 1 “Overall” Winner – Ryobi ONE Plus 18V Cordless Right Angle Drill

After having it explained to me like I was a twelve year old myself (thanks dad?!?), a light bulb went off. If I needed an offset drill, how many other readers on our site might need one too?!? Review time!!! Before we go there, let me tell you the conclusion. I completed the primary research that we always complete at Hot Ten Reviews, and narrowed it down to three choices (our top three here). I went onto Amazon.com, ordered the #1 choice drill (with 24 hour delivery of course – it was for my daughter!), and finished the cabinet the next afternoon. My wife was happy, I was happy, and most importantly, my daughter thought, “daddy was the best!!!” For good order I also purchased a set of diamond tipped drill bits for my table

Head SizeNow onto the review. First you need to think about the key characteristics of a right angle cordless drill. There are four – probably in this order…

Head Size – it makes no sense to get a drill like this if it does not fit into the tiny little crack that it needs to fit into. So the “top to tip” of the right angle piece of the drill needs to be short – the shorter the better. Yes you need torque, yes you need RPMs, and yes it must be price competitively, but if it does not fit, nothing else matters…

TorqueTorque – Torque is the amount of force the right angle drill produces to turn an object, (not how fast it will turn the object – that is covered below under RPMs below). Our right angle drill recommendations all have this covered for almost all home jobs you can think of. Choice #1 has 130 lbs of torque – more than most on the list.

RPMs – Revolutions Per Minute, is the speed at which the drill can turn an object. Higher RPMs are more important for drilling holes, lower RPMs (and higher torque) are more important for installing screws.

Note: some people confuse torque and RPMs. Think of it in weight-lifter’s terms: if Arnold Schwarzenegger was a right angle drill, the total amount of weight he could dead-lift once or twice on a bench-press is maximum torque, and the speed that he could get through say, 30 reps. lifting just the bar (with no weight), is RPMs.

Hot Ten Reviews # 1 “Value” Winner – Makita 12V max Lithium-Ion Cordless Right Angle Drill Kit

Price – Our drill recommendations range in price from $79 to $458, with our #1 recommendation coming in at the low end, plus the cost of the battery and charger. These two additional components are typically sold separately because power tool manufacturers have moved toward “families” of tools. All cordless power tools in “the family” use the same batteries and chargers. If you want an all inclusive kit, we have several of those listed below too.

# 5 Hitachi 18 Volt Cordless Lithium-Ion Cordless Right Angle Drill (DN18DSLP4)

Hitachi builds everything from nuclear power-plants to giant screen televisions. This industrial giant is at the forefront of anything that requires smart design, so it comes as no surprise to us that they are one of the top tool manufacturers in the world. The Hitachi 18 Volt Cordless Lithium-Ion Cordless Right Angle Drill ranks number 5 on our top 10 list because their unit fell on the lower end of torque, and the upper end of price. The head size, at 3.5” is excellent, right up there with #1 and #3, and the RPM max is 1800 – more than ample for what most people will use this drill for. What we like most about the Hitachi is the lifetime warranty which might account for the price.

• 3/8″ keyless chuck
• Weighs 3.3 lbs. without warranty
• Built-in L.E.D. light to illuminate the work area

# 6 Milwaukee 12-Volt 3/8-Inch Cordless Right Angle Drill (2415-21 M12)

The Milwaukee 12-Volt 3/8-Inch Cordless Right Angle Drill ranks number five on our list. While it takes a lot to make the Top 10 at Hot Ten Reviews, we felt this unit was “average” vis-à-vis’ the 10 best in the world. The head is 3.7” which makes it large by our standards, and the unit delivers 100 lbs. of torque. We like the five year warranty and note that this is better than most.

• Top-to-tip head size of 3.7”
• 3/8″ keyless chuck
• Weighs 4.3 lbs. with battery
• Built-in L.E.D. light to illuminate the work area
• 100 lbs. of torque

# 7 DEWALT 20-Volt MAX Lithium-Ion Compact Right Angle Drill (DCD740C1)

This is our second right angle drill highlighted from the DEWALT family, but it is much further down the list. The reason is simple – it’s very low torque. When reading the various customer reviews, this was the number 1 negative comment about this drill (and we could not find the torque listing anywhere and we checked the DEWALT site + three others). We did like the interchangeable batteries with the other DEWALT products however, so if you are looking for a drill as part of an overall kit, this may be the one for you.

• Top-to-tip head size of 4.0”
• 3/8″ keyless chuck
• Weighs 3.9 lbs. with battery
• Built-in L.E.D. light to illuminate the work area
• 20 Volt Battery
• 90-day money back guarantee, 3-year limited warranty and 1-year free service contract
• Battery Included

# 8 Bosch PS11-102 12-Volt Lithium-Ion Right Angle Drill

The Bosch Right Angle Drill is different, in both a good and not as good way, than the rest of the right angle drills on the list. First of all it is not just a right angle drill. The unit has a pivoting head the locks into five different positions, from full extended to a 90 degree angle. Can this come in handy – yes! We feel this is its top feature. The head was a little larger than those above (4.2”) and the torque was fine (115 lbs), max RPMs of 300 RPMs is a little slow, and we don’t like the one year warranty. Still, if you need to get into tight places at strange angles, the Bosch PS11-102 12-Volt Lithium-Ion Right Angle Drill might be the unit for you.

• Top-to-tip head size of 4.2”
• 3/8″ keyless chuck
• Weighs 5.9 lbs. with battery
• Built-in L.E.D. light to illuminate the work area
• 12 Volt Battery
• One year warranty
• Battery Included
• Charger Included

# 9 Milwaukee M18 Cordless Right Angle Drill (2615-21CT)

The next player is the Milwaukee M18 Cordless Right Angle Drill (2615-21CT). This unit has 11 speeds and an electronic clutch, making it great for jobs where “over drilling” is a concern. The drill head is 3 ¾” and the unit delivers 150 lbs. of torque. Total weight is 8.1 lbs., making it one of the heaviest of the units shown.

• Top-to-tip head size of 3.75”
• 11 speed motor
• 3/8″ keyed check
• Weighs 8.1 lbs. with battery
• Built-in L.E.D. light to illuminate the work area
• 18 Volt Battery
• 5-year warranty
• Battery Included
• Charger Included

# 10 Milwaukee 28-Volt Lithium-Ion 1/2-Inch Cordless Right Angle Drill (0721-21 V28)

The last unit on our list is the Milwaukee 28-Volt Lithium-Ion 1/2-Inch Cordless Right Angle Drill. We feel this unit has some intriguing features, including torque of 1081 lbs., but probably belongs strapped to the “man from down under” (“6 foot four and full of muscles”). Its head is 5.9 inches and the unit is 19.2 lbs., which means you’re not going to get into the tiny crack inside your daughter’s cabinet to fix a construction error. This unit is professional grade – designed for boring large holes in between studs, joists or in tight areas. If this is you, we recommend this unit.

• Top-to-tip head size of 5.9”
• 1/2″ keyed check
• Weighs 19.2 lbs. with battery
• Built-in L.E.D. light to illuminate the work area
• 28 Volt Battery
• 5-year warranty
• Battery Included
• Charger Included

Our final thoughts on the right angle cordless drill are as follows: for 99% of the readers of this review, you either just realized that you need the drill (i.e. out of desperation), or you have the foresight to realize you will need one in the future (i.e. out of inspiration). A smaller head size does matter in most cases, particularly if you are reading this out of despiration. However, head size is not the final word for some people, particularly if you are using the unit for regular work. Above all else, it is the nature of the work that will determine which drill is right for you.

At Hot Ten Reviews, we feel these right angle cordless drills are the best in the industry. Good luck with your special project.
